According to experts, the causes of loss can be very diverse – from human error to hacker attacks.
Symantec has announced the results of research ReRez Research, which specifies the reasons for the loss of a variety of companies sensitive information in 2011.
According to the report, most often causes of leaks are bugs employees, equipment failure, security breach, as well as hacker attacks and the loss or theft of devices with data.
According to a study ReRez Research, which was attended by over 4500 organizations in 38 countries, 49% of companies say data leakage, which leads to loss of customers, 47% report undermining the reputation and damage the brand, 41% claim reduction of income, 39% – an increase in costs, as well as 20% of respondents reported falling stock prices.
As experts say Symantec, more than two thirds of study participants made reference to the leakage of confidential information, while 31% reported problems during storage.
“Any organization that provides employees with the ability to pass information through the clouds, putting data at risk of leakage, because they go beyond the protection of the security company,” – says the report. According to the head of the marketing department Symantec Sean Reagan (Sean Regan), companies can not be sure that the security providers that provide services to the cloud service, coincide with the level of data protection secured by the firm.
Another problem for companies in various industries is the fact that a very small percentage of firms backs up critical data. Only 31% of respondents holds up the data inside the firewall, and 18% – beyond its borders.
According to Reagan, companies must strike a balance between ensuring security of sensitive data and the ability to store vast amounts of information.
