The agency advanced scientific research in the Darpa project Terahertz Boundary reported the establishment of a unique electronic receiver operating at a frequency of 850 GHz. currently receiving and decoding of terahertz signals requires a special frequency-step-down converters, as no one has so far not produced a chip capable of operating at these frequencies. Top-down conversion, however, limit the operating capacity of the receiver, and also set an undesirable limit on the signal / noise ratio that limits the ability of the receiver. However, Darpa said that creating closer to the first receiver, operating in the terahertz frequency range, and this may ultimately lead to the emergence of a new class of transmitting and receiving equipment. In a statement, Darpa said that this development – this is a big step towards the production of monolithic microwave IC chips, which can take place in ultra-precision and ultra-fast electronics of the future. In most Darpa said that their interest in the microwave chips lies in the plane of the military: Office intends to publish in their use of new generation radars, in particular, the so-called VISAR-radar or synthetic aperture videoradary. Also terahertz chips will find applications in medicine, particularly in obtaining medical images without the use of devices to ionizing radiation.
